Refocus That Please - by Ralph Reiley
There were 15 people in attendance at the ASA Christmas party, including 3 visitors, Mr. and Mrs. Monte, who plan to show their 1960 era wedding slides at the February meeting and will also be seeing them projected for the first time, and Matthew Hale, a young man from a good family who has an interest in learning about stereo photography.
The spread of food, goodies, and beverages was lavish, abundant, and delicious. Thanks to all who generously brought treats to share.
We watched two interesting slide shows about Abraham Lincoln and his assassination. The first was the award winning slide show produced by Mike Griffith and Larry Moor. The second slide show was from the NSA vault, and our viewing may have been the first to ever take place. The show was made up from stereoviews from the Gordon Hoffman collection [ed. note: Gordie's Civil War collection was purchased by Ken Burns for his famous Civil War PBS series]. As none of us had seen the slide show before, Mike Griffith took it upon himself to give a spontaneous narration of the slides. It was quite an impressive collection of views, many of which Mike had never seen before, which is saying quite a lot about how scarce and rare the images are. Mike's spontaneous narration was often interrupted by his expressions of surprise at seeing views unknown to him.
One other item of note, Bill Moll's last act as president was to graciously hand over the Magic 8 Ball, the illustrious symbol of power, to the incoming president, yours truly.
In my last conversation with Fernbank, we are scheduled for April 12, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM for a table display for Girl Scout Day at Fernbank. In January we will discuss what we would like to display for this April event.
